OPEN PLATFORM_2 09 November 2012 at Access Space - Open Call

RAP(s) - Random Access Performances - TwT.createyourownplatform
Friday, 09 November 2012, 6-8pm at Access Space

Join us for another evening of digital randomness: after the success of OPEN PLATFORM_1 - Technology without Technology you are invited to contribute and take part in OPEN PLATFORM_2 - TwT.createyourownplatform!

Experiment, perform, express, dance, present, sing, rap, read, or just tell us about your digital project or work - but without using anything digital! And this time we give you the option to create your own performance platform!

Anything goes as long as it is about or related to digital technology, 1 to 10 minutes in duration and happening on some sort of platform: you can use the wooden platform provided (65x95cm) or make your own.

OPEN PLATFORM_1 27 July 2012 at Access Space - The Performances

RAP(s)- Random Access Performance(s) - Technology without Technology

Susanne Palzer - Doodle Doot Doot-Doot Doodle Do Doodoo/Taschenrechner

In the (on) space I open the closing event of RAM/RAR/RAA+RAP(s) at Access Space with a tribute to digital pioneers Kraftwerk - before offering the platform to other performers. With a cardboard calculator I perform a transcript of digital sounds from the 1991 ('The Mix') dance version of 'Taschenrechner' in German.

Pocket calculator made in the Refab Space, with thanks to John X. Moseley.

Sunshine Gray - Body Sounds

Next Sunshine Gray takes us back to a pre-digital age and fittingly back into the Media Lab ("pre-RAM/RAR/RAA+RAP(s)"). We are asked to create a soundscape, performing rain, thunder and lightning using only natural acoustics, i.e. body and voice.

Bringing RAM/RAR/RAA+RAP(s) full circle we move into the (off) space of the project, finally turning the former 'vocal booth' in the foyer back into a performance space.

... and eventually we are brutally attacked by viruses, worms and trojan horses.

John X. Moseley

OPEN PLATFORM/RAP: John X. Moseley
HDV Still: Richard Bolam/Susanne Palzer
John X. Moseley talks about his (non) relationship with computers, the (non) flow of data, boxes, body and mind, amplifiers, a-synchronicity, computers as friends, extreme repair men, the Dark Side, special friends, making things and more.

Richard Bolam - High Dynamic Range Photography

Richard Bolam asks us to be very still and to not move while he creates a HDR photograph of the audience without a camera or a computer. Including rendering difficulties and computer crashes he takes us through the whole process of exposures, saving and lining up of exposures using 'special software' to compose the HDR image.

We are being photographed - one of Richard's 'over exposures' captured on timelapse.

Liz Hall - Edit

OPEN PLATFORM/RAP: Liz Hall/Edit

Liz Hall performs a poem about video editing inspired by her work as a film maker. Making nature documentaries she asks if you can really contain and tame nature in the digital format. What does happen when you compress the raw magnificent material into digital information and force it onto a timeline?

James Price - Stream

"... ... save the best 'til last ... stuff I'm just coming up with ... I'm trying not to pause ... technology ... I saw everything ... love in the future ... technology isn't just computers ... I compared computers to fire ... the tech wizards of the world today  ... are like gods and goddesses ... people fetishise things ... it is just a tool ... you can't do performance without technology ... I'm standing on a platform that has been made in clothes that have been made ... we have developed through technology we are made to survive with technology ... the computer is only an extension of this idea ... ... we don't think about stuff any near enough ... ..."

Unfortunately Jake Harries was unable to perform this time.

All performances took place on a wooden platform (65cmx95cm) and were timed to 10 minutes.

We are planning OPEN PLATFORM_2 for November 2012. If you are interested in taking part/performing please email Susanne Palzer.

RAP(s) - Technology without Technology

Thanks to all the performers who took up the challenge of performing the digital without using anything digital and for taking part in the final Performance Test of the Random Process Experiment! It was a great evening of randomness and made this closing event a very special one!

Thanks to everyone at Access Space for all their help and support of RAM/RAR/RAA+RAP(s)!

Here is a little taster - Liz Hall's poem about video editing - more to come soon!

Edit

Static spits from the bright faced screen.
Cursor picks up tiny mountains,
specks of birds. I drag and drop into the timeline,

clipping and cutting, till I can tell the stories
of spring migration, struggle for territory,
the flush to summer plumage.

I try to still a wind-shaken forest but
the image will not stabilise and
crashing ravens jump and flap against the sky,

and as the time bar creeps its binary track,
caterpillars crawl out from between
the keys, trail their clipping path

across my hands. Cables thicken
into tree snakes, shed plastic skin, curl
scaled bodies around the legs of furniture.

The hard drive hum transitions into a chorus of cicadas
which purr and crop at leaves of paper.
A flock of cranes circling across the screen,

breaks free from behind glass and zooms screaming
past me, knocking reels from shelves,
as they head for the cloud that gathers at my ceiling.

Spools bounce and spill onto a carpet of grass
and waves of brown tape cascade into rapids,
white rivers waterfall down stairways

of sparkling granite. As the water swirls
around my feet, I let go command, control, feel
my skin dissolve into pixels of twinkling light,

pin points of colour. I am rendered
ineffectual, compressed
into the memory of atoms. I am

surrounded by the breathing
of a million different creatures,
so that I have no beginning,

no end, one endless loop of life,
no in-point, no out-point.
I am static.
