RAP(s) - Random Access Performances - TwT.codemehappy
Friday, 06 December 2013, 6-8pm at Access Space

We are worried. We want to have fun. We no longer want to queue outside over night for the latest gadget. We, the transitional generation, are forever trapped in a loop between the analogue and digital! In a world in which computational processes seem to run every aspect of our lives, we ask you:

How about switching off and going on?

OPEN PLATFORM/RAP(s) - TwT. is a micro event that explores the digital with physical means by asking performers to present digital work without using anything digital. In a small, intimate space performers take up the challenge of re-thinking the digital with free interpretations that are 1 to 10 minutes in duration, about or related to digital technology and happening on some sort of platform.

'Technology without Technology' (TwT) performances are a creative, playful strategy to negotiate the 'unknowable' of digital technology and the constant information overload in our contemporary world. OPEN PLATFORM_4/RAP(s) - TwT.codemehappy will explore ideas around code and will feature performances by

RAP(s) - Random Access Performances: OPEN PLATFORM_4/RAP(s) - TwT.codemehappy will take place in the Access Space Foyer.

OPEN PLATFORM/RAP(s) - TwT. is back! after three successful events we invite you to contribute and take part in OPEN PLATFORM_4/RAP(s) - TwT. codemehappy

"A code is a rule for converting a piece of information (for example, a letter, word, phrase, or gesture) into another form or representaion, not necessarily of the same type. ... One reason for coding is to enable communication in places where ordinary plain language, spoken or written, is difficult or impossible." (Wikipedia)

Experiment, perform, express, dance, present, sing, rap, read, or just tell us about your digital project or work - but without using anything digital! OPEN PLATFORM/RAP(s) - TwT. is open to anyone interested in re-thinking the digital and not limited to artists or professional performers/presenters.

Anything goes as long as it is about or related to digital technology, 1 to 10 minutes in duration and happening on some sort of platform: you can use the wooden platform provided (65x95cm) or make your own.

OPEN PLATFORM is a performative event that explores the digital with physical means and the fusion performance and technology in the widest sense.

OPEN PLATFORM_3 22 February 2013 at Access Space - Performances

RAP(s)- Random Access Performance(s) - TwT.crossplatform

Susanne Palzer - Black Screen

OPEN PLATFORM_3 opens with the audience being ushered into a blacked out Access Space foyer. With voice and text and in total darkness I simulate a brief scenario of computer start up problems. Questioning our contemporary dependancy on technology I wonder if we still know what may turn us on instead?

Richard Bolam - What do you do when the Sat-nav fails?

Richard Bolam stays with the theme of technology failure by describing a journey in which he keeps driving and driving and driving ... until he runs out of fuel and eventually finds himself hungry and lost by the roadside - with an empty phone.

Robin Close - This Performance contains Strobe Effects

Robin Close presents a different take on 'on/off' and surprises the audience by blinking his eyes rapidly, creating strobe effects for his own vision.

John X. Moseley - Plato's Mechanical Book

For his second appearance at OPEN PLATFORM John X. Moseley continues his reflection on technology with a poem: a story about a book reading itself - the book reads, Plato writes and gains riches in the process. Featuring mechanical trombones, colossal cucumbers and other wondrous things, it also leaves us pondering sheds and Plato's cave.

Stuart Faulkner - Double Dragon

Stuart Faulkner closes OPEN PLATFORM_3 with a delightful physical reenactment of a computer game. After 'training' two audience members as 'players' he leads us from the platform out into the car park where we are let loose as 'villains' attacking the 'players' and their 'controllers'. At the end of a fun evening we are all winners! ; )

OPEN PLATFORM_3 - 22 February 2013 at Access Space

Thanks to all the performers who once more took up the challenge of performing the digital without using anything digital! We enjoyed a fun evening with failed sat navs, BIOS problems, poetry, strobe effects and computer games. ; )
This time even more people crammed into our micro performance space - so another big thank you to the great audience! We look forward to welcoming you back for more Random Access Performance(s) at OPEN PLATFORM_4

If you feel inspired to perform/present at the next event please email Susanne or Jake.

Also thanks to Access Space for co-hosting and Richard Bolam for fabulous event documentation.

OPEN PLATFORM_2 09 November 2012 at Access Space - Performers

RAP(s)- Random Access Performance(s) - TwT.createyourownplatform

Susanne Palzer - Data Management Part III

Before following the original idea of offering the platform to other performers I open the event with another experiment in context of my investigations into the medium of presentations. Working cross platform between technology and performance I use a computing text by Ben Kneen and interpret it as a performance script - attempting to synch key data across multiple platforms.

The full text can be found here: Ad Ops Insider/Data Management Part III: Synching Online Data to a Data Management Platform.

Sunshine Gray - Body Sounds II/Audience

With another sound making performance Sunshine Gray continues her theme of natural acoustics, i.e. body and voice, from OPEN PLATFORM_1. This time she asks us to partly re-enact a participatory workshop she led in context of Amie Slavin's digital sound work 'Audience'. Guided by the performer the OPEN PLATFORM_2 audience perform themselves while the division between performer/audience and their respective roles come into question.

Information on Amie Slavin's original artwork can be found here.
